Former player Bernard Anton was for many years a member of the Perth Chess Club and then the Metro Chess Club.

Following his passing, Norbert Muller, President of the Perth Chess Club established an inter-club team's competition with the Metro Chess Club that would ensure the name of Bernard Anton would be remembered. A wooden chess board has been engraved with Bernard Anton Shield, Perth - Metro Challenge. It was considered to be a fitting tribute to him.

The first match was played in 2007. The format of this team's event is a three member team in three separate rating divisions. Participants play each opposition member within their division. Rating divisions may change each year but is usually around Open, U/1750 & U/1400. Time limit per player per game is 30 minutes.

During the year one full round is played at each club. The total score of players in each club over both home and away games (ie 54 games) indicate the winning club for that year.

This competition strengthens the ties between our clubs through friendly rivalry and enjoyable games. Home and away matches are always useful in introducing members to another club and its members.
